German rights organization fails to block Meta’s AI data usage.
May 23 (Reuters)- A German consumer rights organization lost a court order Friday to halt Meta Platforms (META.O), opens new tab from training its AI models using Facebook and Instagram postings.
State-funded consumer rights organization Verbraucherzentrale NRW was denied an injunction by the Cologne court.
Last month, Meta said it will train its AI models in the EU using adult public content on its platforms and user interactions with its AI.
On April 30, 2025, the Verbraucherzentrale North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW) issued Facebook and Instagram a cease-and-desist letter to suspend their AI training programs. The group warns further legal action if Meta refuses.
The North Rhine-Westphalia Consumer Advice Center’s Christine Steffen, who specializes in data protection, made the following statement in an official announcement: “It is imperative to act quickly because once data has been incorporated into AI, it is difficult to retrieve it.”
All public postings and user interactions will feed Meta AI beginning May 27, 2025. EU users must explicitly opt out to prevent this.
Meta should just get permission from relevant parties. If Meta breaks EU legislation, Europe will suffer “Schrems added.
Other European consumer organizations, privacy agencies, and the DPA may take action once the Meta AI launches in two weeks.
While Meta AI training continues, privacy experts like Proton, the operator of one of the top VPN and encrypted email applications, advise Europeans to opt out. “It’s impossible to foresee what this data may be used for in the future – better to be cautious than sorry,” Proton stated in a LinkedIn post.
